Overview

A 2015 William C. Morris YA Debut Award Finalist

Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga.

Foolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Ava -- in all other ways a normal girl -- is born with the wings of a bird. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naive to the twisted motives of others. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the summer solstice celebration. That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava's quest and her family's saga build to a devastating crescendo. First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human.

  • Heartbreaking and lovely

This is a book about the loves and lives of a family of quirky women that culminates with a young set of twins being born, the girl with wings. Honestly, this is one of the loveliest books I've read in a long while and one I continually recommend as one that will captivate you with beautiful and lyrical writing and break your heart at the same time. The characters are layered and haunting and it shows all the different ways we can love and be healed. Simply gorgeous. Read it immediately!

  • Magical Realism at its finest

    Samantha B. - 4 years 6 months ago

Ava Lavender was born with the wings of a bird. In any other family, this would seem a strange occurrence but not for hers. Recounting the lives of her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Ava paints a picture of a family whose history is riddled with tragedy. Whenever a woman in her family falls in love, death soon follows. This causes the women to close themselves off to the world while at the same time growing closer to each other. A fantastic blend of magical realism and young adult contemporary, The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender transports the reader to a different world. Immediately, one is drawn into the plights of this family. Fantastically written, this is a book to be devoured in a single sitting. There will be laughter, tears, and a ton of smiles. I eagerly anticipate any future works from author Leslye Walton.
