  • Witty, engaging, “intelligent fluff” in a cozy-mystery series

    Linda S. - 4 years 7 months ago

Flavia’s voice (however preposterously precocious) is a hoot and the post-war atmosphere of this small village is affecting. Plenty of engaging ongoing characters that do (somewhat) develop across the books. As always, in such “cozy” series, the supply of odd characters and sinister goons-on seems endless. The plots become ever-more improbable as the books go on, but they remained literate, but light, witty and humane and engaging.

  • Don't Want This Series to End

    Pat D. - 5 years 10 months ago

This is a truly fun-to-read mystery series. I"m up to book 5 and so looking forward to the next five in the series. Flavia de Luce has the intelligence of Nancy Drew with the style of Wednesday of the Addams Family. If you like chemistry as much as Flavia then you're going to learn a lot more of it by reading her thought processes. Plus the audiobooks are sensational. Narrator Jayne Entwhistle really does sound like the Flavia portrayed by author Alan Bradley. Not necessary but helpful if you read the books in order. #SummerReading

  • Charming mystery

    Karen D. - 5 years 10 months ago

Charming "cozy mystery". The author truly captures the spirit of a clever young girl who thinks that she is misunderstood and the smartest person in the room. The mystery is a well developed story and the characters are fully realized. This is the first book in a series. #SummerReading

  • A fun romp in 50s England

This book is part mystery, part nostalgia and part laugh out loud. An amazing mystery and a strong start to a series that is constantly surprising an amazing. Recommend to any mystery fan. #summerreading

  • The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is much more than just a good murder mystery story.

    Magdalena B. - 5 years 11 months ago

This book is the first in one of my all time favorite series, because Flavia is one of those characters who actually has character. The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is a mix of mystery, chemistry, murder, and more. If you are looking for a sleuth who finds not only trouble, but also has a quick mind and a ready answer, then this is a must read. The very first time I read a Flavia book, I found the wording a bit odd, and almost didn't continue. Lucky for me, I did finish it, and have continued to consume every new addition to the Flavia de Luce series as soon as it comes out. Flavia is one of the most unique characters I have ever met, and I enjoy not only her, but also her love of chemistry. The tumultuous relationships she has with family and acquaintances, as well as the development of characters over the course of this series is, in my opinion, what makes Alan Bradley such a brilliant writer. My family also enjoys these books, and not entirely for the same reasons I do, some like the mystery more than the character interactions, and others vise versa. Flavia de Luce is a character that is enjoyable, real, and loveable in a way that few characters are. She is smart, funny, tenacious, and witty. While The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie may not be as enjoyable for everyone as it is for me, I have yet to meet someone who has disliked it, and I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a new good read.
