The name Stephen King conjures to mind all sorts of nasty imagery. Monsters, ghosts, murder, but there's a lot more to be explored with him, namely The Territories. Jack is 12 and his B movie actress mom is dying. His father died many years ago and his uncle Morgan is just itching to take whatever is left from this broken family. Everything seems bleak and hopeless until an unassuming janitor named Speedy Parker comes into Jack's life and offers him the thing he needs most: hope. Speedy tells Jack all about The Territories, a world that mirrors our own in many ways, except the fantastic is not only possible there, but it's real. This includes a way to save Jack's mother, the titular Talisman. What follows is his adventure across our world and it's parallel. Jack grows and learns and loses and every moment of it is beautiful and wonderful and horrible. I read this book when I was 14 and come back to it every few years and it always makes me feel something. Please give this a look and don't let the author's name scare you.
