Overview

Mr. Hood's Holiday House has stood for a thousand years, welcoming countless children into its embrace. It is a place of miracles, a blissful round of treats and seasons, where every childhood whim may be satisfied.

There is a price to be paid, of course, but young Harvey Swick, bored with his life and beguiled by Mr. Hood's wonders, does not stop to consider the consequences. It is only when the House shows its darker face--when Harvey discovers the pitiful creatures that dwell in its shadows--that he comes to doubt Mr. Hood's philanthropy.

The House and its mysterious architect are not about to release their captive without a battle, however. Mr. Hood has ambitions for his new guest, for Harvey's soul burns brighter than any soul he has encountered in a thousand years...

  • Clive Barker Wrote a Book for Children

    Aaron K. - 6 years 1 month ago

Clive Barker is mostly known for a couple of his horror novels and the films made from them, but his richest work is in the realm of fantasy. Clive has also published a couple books geared toward young readers with equal success. The Thief of Always is possibly his most accessible and digestible of any of his work, with a story that will intrigue young and older readers alike. The book follows Harvey who, dissatisfied with his life, finds himself in the magical world of the Holiday House- a mansion which every hour of every day contains the months of the year, with extravagant celebrations for each holiday, overseen by a group of odd, magical beings. But what seems like a wonderful and happy place holds a terrible secret for the children caught in its snare. The Thief of Always may be written for young adults, but the richness of the world and Barker's expert storytelling make for an enjoyable read for any age.
