"Wildly imaginative, really interesting." --President Barack Obama on The Three-Body Problem trilogy
The Three-Body Problem is the first chance for English-speaking readers to experience the Hugo Award-winning phenomenon from China's most beloved science fiction author, Liu Cixin.
Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.

To call the Three Body Problem an alien invasion story would be accurate, but it would also be a gross simplification of one of the most ambitious and challenging works of science fiction in the past decade. Cixin Liu weaves a tapestry of characters, places, and timelines to tell an expansive and complex alien invasion saga that spans millennia. Although the hard science and wordy descriptions can be daunting (Liu has a background as a computer engineer, and it shows), the consistent payoff and wholly unique world (ahem, galaxy) building make it more than worth it. Interweaving politics and history into the narrative gives the story an immediate relevancy and helps to ground the world Liu establishes, no matter how abstract the scientific aspects manage to get. Admittedly challenging, but refreshingly rewarding.
HPB Staff ReviewGripping, hugely inventive, and though you don't need to know anything about quantum physics, you may feel the need to stop and do some basic Googling, so it makes more sense. I don't normally read sci-fi, but this book has converted me. I've been recommending it to so many customers, my store never has any copies left!
HPB Staff ReviewThree Body gave me nightmares, stoked my imagination and sent me clamoring for its sequels. There's almost no way to describe this book (or this series) in a short blurb, but if you are a fan of speculative sci-fi and you want to know where the genre is heading next, you have to make sure to read the Three Body trilogy.
Suppose the inhabitants of Earth learned that an alien fleet was on the way to invade our planet, but would not arrive for another 400 years. Suppose that, through an application of quantum entanglement, the aliens could not only monitor our every action to prepare for the invasion, but could also influence events at the quantum level. How would we respond to this threat? The first book in this trilogy sets up this situation and does a very thorough job of analyzing the various scientific, societal, and psychological problems it would raise. The translator's footnotes provide much-appreciated background about some details that would not be clear to a non-Chinese reader. This is very much a book about well-defined characters acting in a well-imagined world, and it will leave you eager to move on to the next volume in the series. #BannedBook
Great translation of a popular Chinese sci-fi book. Liu brings together the virtual world of gaming with distant aliens. Thought provoking with a decent pace. #SummerReading
