Imagine a venn diagram of these tropes: enemies-to-rivals-to-lovers and time travel. If you think you fall in the dead center of this diagram, I could not recommend this book to you enough. Authors El-Mohtar and Gladstone weave an intricate romance between two agents on opposite sides of a war that transcends time itself through the letters they leave behind for each other. The love between these two women is frighteningly intimate, hopeful and doomed all at once. This Is How You Lose the Time War is a novella that sets itself apart from the science fiction genre with lyrical exposition and strong, engaging protagonists. A must read!
HPB Staff ReviewI originally listened to this in audiobook format from the library and loved it so much that I immediately went to the nearest HPB to get the hardcover so I could read it over and over and lend it out to friends. It's such a beautiful blend of science fiction and queer romance. Despite the fantastical setting, the journey this book takes you on with these two characters feels utterly real. As much as I love scifi and time travel and the way that was presented here, it was the characters and how they were written so beautifully that made me fall in love with this book. I think what struck me most was that it was anything but a typical romance. Their relationship was never about physical actions but rather emotions and words, which I think made their connection that much stronger. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who enjoys either science fiction or romance. #SummerReading
