The young adult fiction genre has recently experienced an explosion in popularity with books such as 'The Hunger Games,' 'The Maze Runner,' and 'Divergent' topping bestseller lists across the world. 'Uglies' by Scott Westerfeld belongs in the same rank as these more popular dystopian young-adult novels. 'Uglies' is highly original and set in a futuristic post-apocalyptic world. Tally Youngblood, the central character, is relatable to teenagers, as well as adults, as she tries to figure out who she is and what she stands for in a society that values normality and fitting in above most everything else. She's just on the cusp of turning sixteen and must soon make a huge decision; to get the appearance perfecting surgery that all citizens in her world get at age sixteen and join the carefree population of 'New Pretty Town,' or to run from everything she has ever known in search of a more fulfilling life. The surgery is supposed to end all appearance based prejudices and create ultimate world peace, but it changes people in more ways than expected. Pick up a copy of 'Uglies' for a fast paced, yet thought-provoking, read.
HPB Staff ReviewIf you enjoy good futuristic fiction or series like The Hunger Games or The Maze Runner, then Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is something you should pick up today! Scott Westerfeld has created a uniquely dystopian society with fascinating inhabitants. An adventure filled storyline packed with action sequences that will keep the pages turning. As well as futuristic technology, such as hover boards, heated jackets and crash bracelets, that will keep your imagination running wild. I found there to be many similarities to Orwell's 1984 and the encompassing idea of "Big Brother" constantly monitoring society. Not only is Uglies an enjoyable and wildly entertaining read but it also forces the reader to contemplate control and the many stealthy ways it can be imparted. Once you've finished Uglies you're sure to enjoy the sequels which include Pretties, Specials and Extras!
HPB Staff ReviewThis has been an absolute favorite of mine for years! I read it when I was in middle school and it was an incredible commentary on appearance and the unnecessary weight we place on it. I recommend it for anyone who wants an easy read with a great theme. #SpringPicks
I feel like this book is how a lot of young people feel during the awkward phases of life. This can really put in to perspective how some pre-teens and teenagers feel about life. But it does show how it will be if you keep on a good path. I really love this series! LOTS of excitement!
