Overview

The first twisted and futuristic novel in the perennially popular New York Times bestselling Unwind dystology by Neal Shusterman.

In America after the Second Civil War, the Pro-Choice and Pro-Life armies came to an agreement: The Bill of Life states that human life may not be touched from the moment of conception until a child reaches the age of thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, a parent may choose to retroactively get rid of a child through a process called "unwinding." Unwinding ensures that the child's life doesn't "technically" end by transplanting all the organs in the child's body to various recipients. Now a common and accepted practice in society, troublesome or unwanted teens are able to easily be unwound.

With breathtaking suspense, this book follows three teens who all become runaway Unwinds: Connor, a rebel whose parents have ordered his unwinding; Risa, a ward of the state who is to be unwound due to cost-cutting; and Lev, his parents' tenth child whose unwinding has been planned since birth as a religious tithing. As their paths intersect and lives hang in the balance, Shusterman examines complex moral issues that will keep readers turning the pages until the very end.

  • New World Dytopian

    Ashley I. - 2 years 1 month ago

This is an amazing find out of the teen fiction section. IT isn't one of the ones that blew up when dystopia became so popular, but it is so much better than others I have read. There are a lot of political effects in the book. It has enough explanation to understand how you could get to that dystopian future type. A classic story of teens rebelling against a system that keeps them down, but this system has the ability to kill them. Chilling in some parts and all around a wonderful book.

  • Near-future Dystopia

    Devin L. - 5 years 4 months ago

Shusterman captures an image of the future in which children over the age of 13 can be "unwound" at their parents' discretion, a terrifying process in which they are broken down for parts that are used in medical procedures. It is a terrifying dystopia in which so much of society is advanced at an incredible cost. At its core, it is a story of incredible humanity and the limits to which it can be pushed.

  • You can't change laws without first changing human nature

    Paola D. - 7 years 2 months ago

This book brings up an interesting concept of what life is and what it is worth. We see how laws about unwinding affect kids that all come from different backgrounds and how each of them has different opinions on them as well. By the end of this book you will find yourself questioning what a life truly is and how much of ourselves is left over when taken apart.
