A young hacker up to her ears in debt accidentally glitches herself into the middle of the opening ceremony of the world's biggest virtual reality championships. She quickly finds herself invited to Tokyo to meet the creator of the games, and is thrust into a complex web of intrigue and suspense as she struggles to find out who is plotting trouble and what exactly it is that the conspirators want, and who they are. She must manage her suddenly very busy life: investigating, training to compete in the championships, and even possibly falling in love. Warcross moves at breakneck speed and is a fun cyberpunk-inspired romp set in a fully realized and enchanting-to-imagine near future where reality and the wondrous worlds of virtual and augmented reality all co-exist together through special goggles and lenses. At once a noir-inspired detective story full of criminals and hacking and assassination attempts, Warcross is also an unlikely romance between outsiders, and a brilliant frenetic display of competitive augmented life that is waiting for us in a future that's just around the corner. An exciting thrill ride, I finished the second half of the book in one fevered reading session. Now I await the certain-to-appear sequel to find out the answers to the questions that remain.
