This beautifully written novel is an absolute genus piece of literature. The plot is a love story, a murder mystery, and a tale of social inequality. Delia Owens couldn't have written something more beautiful and compelling. I'm exited to see how this translates into a movie, but I would recommend reading this before the movie to have Owens craft the pictures in your head before the movie can.
HPB Staff ReviewAuthor Delia Owens uses her expertise as a naturalist to describe the coastal regions of North Carolina intricately, bringing all the creatures of the marshes to life. She describes Kya's journey from being an abandoned child to becoming a grown woman forced to make it on her own, recognizing the longing for companionship with the conflicting need for solitude. The whodunit woven through the novel is compelling, if only because Kya and her supporters are compelling. The sleuthing falls flat and feels anachronistic to the time and place. The Amanda Hamilton poetry seems inserted without cause. On balance, however, it's an easy read that will keep you interested until the last page.
