#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER
At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State--and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

Strayed's memoir about her journey through the Pacific Crest Trail left me with mixed feelings about the overall book. Her writing along the trail was not overpowered with detail of the scenery, but filled with realistic feelings that were relatable even to someone who has never hiked at all. This was a nice surprise, because I thought I was going to jump into a book filled with nothing but imagery pages. She frequently flips back and forth from the trail to pre-trail life. This is where the mixed feelings start happening. Her life pre-hike is told in bits and pieces. Most of the characters are referred back to again and again, but their stories sometimes feel unnecessary. There were parts in these flashbacks that had me asking, "Why am I reading this?". But, overall it left me wondering whether or not I would have the same courage Cheryl Strayed shows throughout her journey.
HPB Staff ReviewCheryl is lost - she cheats on her wonderful husband, and has a complete disregard for herself while worshipping her own wants. It shouldn't make for a good read, but somehow it does. Cheryl doesn't glorify or justify her actions; she tells the tale of how she discovered being comfortable in her own skin, alone and in the wilderness, can be just the provision a lost soul needs. Trekking the Pacific Crest Trail is an arduous task, but reading Cheryl's book is not. She is down to earth, shockingly honest, clever and witty about her past, and leaves you feeling a sense of hope for those of us who struggle.
HPB Staff ReviewMy adventure with Wild was complex, but good. Reading the hike on the PCT, I thoroughly enjoyed Strayed's writing. She was straightforward and fun. She described emotions that I could relate to, even though I have never been on a significant hike, nor would I call myself "outdoorsy". But she also described flashbacks to her life before the trail. Some of these stories felt unnecessary and dramatic, which left me feeling like I could have skipped them. Overall, the most important thing that this book left me with was wondering if I, myself could do the same thing as Strayed has done. She made me feel empowered and inspired to take an adventure.
HPB Staff ReviewI savored this book. The writing is so delicious and poetic. There are pieces that are difficult, victorious, and even romantic. Just like life, just like a good therapy session, or tearjerker - this book delivers. Based on true events in the author's life, if you like non-fiction, and want to be inspired you will love this book. Cheryl Strayed's writing will sooth the soul. The biggest takeaway from this wonderful book is courage. It might encourage an act of bravery.
